Tomatoes, Procrastination and Focus

There's usually a point during the week when you struggle to get going or to focus. Sometimes you might even be avoiding your desk. If you're working from home right now, you might be finding yourself putting some washing in, or making extra cups of coffee.

You might describe this as procrastination?

This avoidance could be related to a stress response causing you to freeze.

But what can you do to get through this?

There are a few techniques you can use, but one that I've used for a few years is the Pomodoro (Tomato) Technique - although I'm not sure where the tomato bit comes in...

Whilst there are many websites and even books about it, the technique is actually really simple.

When you next find yourself sitting at your desk (or even avoiding your desk totally!), then try this.

Set your phone timer to 25 minutes.

Then start on whatever the task is that you're avoiding.

Once the 25 minute are up, you can take a 5-10 minute break.

Then decide whether to do another 25 minutes on the same task, or a different one.

Even if you're keen to get started on a task, you can use this technique to remind you to take breaks, especially those all important screen breaks!

And a final tip.

You set the rules here so if you want to change the 25 minutes to a longer or shorter duration then please do that. Sometimes it's a tough job and you can only face 10 minutes. Whilst sometimes you want to work until a screen break so 45-50 minutes seems better.
